Dtec: frequently asked questions
Your all-in starting cost depends on the desk tier and visa count you pick. The realistic starting cost lands as follows:
- Hot desk only, no visa: from AED 18,000/year
- Flexi-desk + 1 visa: from AED 18,375/year
- Dedicated desk + 2 visas: typically AED 28,000–35,000/year
They are neighbours but they target different stages:
- Dtec: tech-only, ecosystem (Sandbox, Oraseya, mentors), best for early-stage and fundable startups
- IFZA: generalist, cheaper entry from AED 12,900, dual-license for services + commercial
If you want investor access and a startup community, pick Dtec. If you want the lowest TCO for a solo consulting or e-commerce play, IFZA wins.
Sandbox targets pre-seed to seed-stage tech startups with a working product or strong prototype. You do not need to be incorporated at Dtec to apply, but cohort members typically license here once admitted. Phase 2 cohort founders receive USD 150,000 via SAFE (USD 110K cash + USD 40K programme fee) from Oraseya Capital over a 12-week intensive.
Oraseya Capital is the AED 500M (USD 136M) venture fund of Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ), the parent of DSOA. It invests from pre-seed through Series B. Sandbox cohort cheques come in via SAFE at USD 150K. Direct investments outside the accelerator are negotiated case-by-case (equity, priced rounds, follow-on participation).
Incorporation can be done remotely. KYC, MoA signing and DSOA submissions are handled by e-sign and email. You only need to fly in for the residence visa (medical, Emirates ID, stamping). A 5 to 7 day trip is enough. The license itself issues in 7 to 10 working days.
Yes. Dtec is built for it. Most founders start on a hot desk, graduate to a dedicated desk once they hire the first 2 to 3 people, then take a private office suite as the team scales. Visa quota follows: 2 on flexi-desk, then 1 extra per 9 sqm of dedicated space. After 5 years on campus, teams that have outgrown Dtec typically move to the wider DSO free zone.
